Pre-Recorded Spelling Lists

As if March 2019, Squeebles Spelling Test contains over 200 pre-recorded spelling tests that you can download into the app free of charge for your children to use. The tests are based around the  UK national curriculum guidelines and are split into four colour-coded levels loosely aimed at 2 year age bands from reception (R) up to year 6. Spread across the age ranges, you will see seven Squeebles Phonics categories, which start with the New Readers level and then range from Bronze level up to Sapphire. These are tests that are based around the phonics system of learning, with words grouped into tests by letter sounds, in line with the UK government's "Letters and Sounds" programme.

You can customise these lists by adding or removing words, re-recording the words in your own voice or even changing the spelling to fit in with your own country's preferences, if you don't use UK English. Downloading tests into the app is easy - just go to the Parent / Teacher Zone > KeyStageFun Tests > Downloadable Tests.

Please note: if you are using version 6.9 of the app or below, we recommend upgrading to version 7.0 or above so that you see the new categories as listed below.

Tricky Words for New Readers

These tests contain tricky words that may crop up regularly in beginner reading material.

Year 1 Exception Words

These tests contain exception words for UK year 1 pupils. Exception words don't always follow regular English spelling conventions and can be difficult to decipher using phonics, so will need to be learned from sight/memory.

Years 1 & 2
Squeebles Phonics: Bronze

Bronze level, aimed at year 1 & 2 pupils, introduces commonly used phonemes and graphemes: ch, sh, th (as in 'them') ng, th (as in thin), ai, ee, oa, oo (as in 'moon'), oo (as in 'look'), ar, or, ur, ow, oi, er, igh, ear, air, ure, are, or, un.

These are followed by some compound words and short consolidation tests.

Squeebles Phonics: Silver

Silver level, aimed at year 1 & 2 pupils, focuses on CVCC words, which helps with grapheme recognition and reading adjacent consonants. What's a CVCC word? A 'C' is a 'consonant phoneme' and a 'V' is a 'vowel phoneme'. For example, the word 'boost' can be read phonetically as 'b-oo-s-t' (which you can see is represented by C-V-C-C).

Squeebles Phonics: Gold

Gold level, aimed at year 1 & 2 pupils, focuses on: Spelling patterns (ay, ou, ie, ea, oy, ir, ue, aw, ew, oe, au, ey, wh, ph, le, el, al, il). Split digraphs (a-e, e-e, i-e, o-e, u-e). Alternative pronunciations of a, e, i, o, u, ow, ie, ea, ou, y, ch, c, g, ey. Alternative spellings for the sounds: ch, j, s. Use of 'silent' letters: b, g, k, w, t, e. Alternative spellings for the sounds: z, u, ear, ar, air, or, ur, ai, ee, igh, oa, (y)oo, oo, sh, zh. Also some homophones and contractions.

Squeebles Phonics: Platinum

Platinum level, aimed at year 1 & 2 pupils, is dedicated to suffixes. So that children are clear as to how the root word changes with the addition of a suffix, in most tests we've included both the root word (eg. 'happy') and the newly formed word ('happiest'), even though your child may not find the root word challenging to spell correctly. Over the course of 6 tests, the following suffixes are included: s, es, ies, ied, ier, est, ily, ment, ed, ing, er, ful, ness, en, ly.

High Frequency Words

These tests contain two hundred high-frequency words, suitable for newly confident readers.

Year 2: Exception Words

These tests contain exception words for UK year 2 pupils. Exception words don't always follow regular English spelling conventions and can be difficult to decipher using phonics, so will need to be learned from sight/memory.

 Years 3 & 4
National Curriculum Words

These tests contain 100 statutory words that children must be taught as part of the UK National Curriculum.

Squeebles Phonics: Emerald

Emerald level, aimed at year 3 & 4 pupils, covers some more suffixes (ly, ous, vowels), endings (ure, ion, tion, sion, cian), prefixes, some more letter sounds (the i sound using y, the u sound using ou, sc, ch, ue, differences between ei, eigh and ey) and some more homophones.

Years 5 & 6
National Curriculum Words

A further, slightly trickier, 100 statutory words that children must be taught as part of the UK National Curriculum.

Squeebles Phonics: Sapphire

Sapphire level, aimed at year 5 & 6 pupils, covers some more advanced endings (cious, tious, cial, tial, ant, ance, ancy, ent, ence, ency, able, ably, ible, ibly), suffixes for 'fer' words, more difficult sounds (ei, ough, words with silent letters) and some more homophones.
